open-source AR glasses use AI to translate languages, detect images, search web and more

Meet frame, a pair of AI glasses by brilliant labs

Brilliant Labs’ Frame AI glasses can translate languages, recognize images, search the internet for results, and more using augmented reality and artificial intelligence. The wearable technology is designed to be worn as a pair of eyeglasses equipped with AI capabilities. In fact, OpenAI, along with Whisper and Perplexity, lends its coding and technology to Frame AI glasses, helping them analyze what goes around the users and inform them about it. In the video released by Brilliant Labs, the AI glasses flash the information right in front of the user’s eyes.

They show them the kind of architecture they’re looking at, the translation of the phrases they see in the language they speak, and where they can find and buy the pair of sneakers they’ve seen on the streets or online. Brilliant Labs has stepped up its game by adding another pair of lenses to its monocle, the dubbed world’s smallest AR device that clips onto glasses. With the Frame AI glasses, users don’t need to clip anything – they just need to wear the eyewear, with both eyes enjoying augmented reality.

Customizable and open-source AR glasses

The Frame AI glasses by Brilliant Labs can be equipped with prescription lenses too, so users who have eye conditions can enjoy the hands-free AR world the wearable technology can offer. The design team says that its new AI glasses can become the user’s new daily pair of specs or just a workbench prototyping tool, given that it’s open-source. In a way, the glasses with AR capabilities can be customizable since users who love to modify wearable technology, hack systems, or build their own apps and functionalities can experiment with the Frame AI glasses. So far, Brilliant Labs is preparing the open-source files of their invention, which can soon go live on their GitHub page.

Designing frame AI glasses with AR lenses

Dissecting the Frame AI glasses, the thick set of AR glasses boosted by a MicroOLED chip is inserted into the frame’s lens slot, and right behind it are the optional prescription lenses. The MicroOLED technology helps improve the contrast, color, and sharpness of the digital visuals that the users can see for a more lifelike display while they surf the web, recognize images, and perform other AI functions. The circuit board is inside the eyewear’s bridge, and the batteries are encased in circular, pop-like cases made of polished steel cover and set on the tips of the glasses.

Brilliant Labs attempts to make the wearable technology as light as possible even with its modern-day tech, resulting in a weight of less than 40 grams. There are three color variants available for Frame AI glasses, and one of them makes the wirings and boards appear faintly visible with its semi-translucent material. The AR eyewear is also rechargeable, and here comes another fun part: Frame AI glasses include an orange clip called Mister Power that users attach to the eyewear’s bridge – where the circuit board is located – so they can charge the device using the USB port at the bottom of the clip. Brilliant Labs says that after a single charge, the Frame AI glasses can last all day even with frequent use of its AR functions and apps.

Brilliant Labs says that a bright microOLED is bonded to a thin geometric prism optic to display ~20 degree diagonal field of view and that the Frame AI glasses have been designed for an inter-pupillary distance range of 58-72mm. While the specs can cover most people, the design team suggests using the Eye Measure app to gauge whether the AR device is suitable for the user. As of publishing the story, Brilliant Labs has already opened its pre-order pool with a starting price of 349 USD, including tax. The first batch is expected to ship on April 15th, 2024, and users can check out the team’s Github page for the open-source design files and codes of the Frame AI glasses.
