the sawdust series breathes functionality into waste

Junmyung Song fashions discarded sawdust into whimsical furniture. The Sawdust Series presents a collection of vibrant chairs that together depict a dystopian world in which natural objects must be chosen by humans to survive. Unearthing new meanings from the form of the abandoned, the Sawdust Series is created by imagining the original appearance of a natural object that has been pulverized using discarded sawdust. The process emphasizes the sense of uncertainty by representing the changes of the original object in reverse order, through which the Seoul-based designer explores and records the interaction between nature and humans, uncertainty, and control.

junmyung Song unearths atypical, stalactite-like forms

Based on the idea of survival of the fittest, Junmyung Song tells the story of the evolution of natural objects into furniture for self-preservation, and these changes reveal various atypical forms and characteristics of natural objects that cannot be expected. Through this, the works tap into the poignant theme of ‘Uncertainty in the Shape of Natural Objects.’

The designer’s atypical and diverse works are expressed through the subject matter of sawdust, which is difficult to process due to its small particle size and distinct shapes, and recognized as a waste that is commonly discarded in everyday life due to its low value of use. However, this specificity represents his worldview well, while the complementary changes and non-formations that appear when combined with other materials convey the uniqueness of evolving natural objects.
